The name Eglantine

Three meanings, one spelling

If you wanted the program, it is the Switch 2 emulator maintained as Djihads80/Eglantine. The word is older than that repository, which was created on 2026-10-29. The software shares its name with the flower and given name; the sources here do not establish why its developers chose it.

Wiktionary traces English eglantine to French églantine, Middle English eglentyn, Old French aiglantin, and Latin aculentus, “prickly,” from aculeus, a sting or thorn. The plant people mean is Rosa rubiginosa, also called Rosa eglanteria or sweetbriar: prickly, fragrant leaves, pink flowers, red hips. Behind the Name lists Eglantine as a rare English feminine name from that flower, via Old French from a vulgar Latin form, and notes Chaucer’s Prioress as Eglentyne in the 14th century. It also notes a French spelling Églantine and a 2007 French popularity rank of 494. I am not turning that rank into a current statistic.

Wikipedia’s disambiguation page collects other uses: historical people, fictional characters, a 1971 song, a rose cultivar, a Dutch chamber of rhetoric, and a ship that once carried the name. I am not writing biographies. Spelling slips for the emulator — elgantine, eglatine, englatine, egglantine, eglantime — belong on the emulator pages, not on a flower article.

Questions

Is the emulator named after a person?

The readme does not say that. The public etymology is the rose. The developer named in the readme is Camille LaVey, which is a separate fact.

I searched the flower and landed here.

The rose is Rosa rubiginosa. The rest of this site is the emulator guide. Use the plant sources below if that was the search.
