Install Eglantine on Linux

Eight Linux files

The 7 Nov 2026 release has four x86_64 files and four aarch64 files: a plain AppImage, a PGO AppImage, a plain tar.gz, and a PGO tar.gz. Names look like eglantine-linux-x86_64.AppImage and eglantine-linux-x86_64-pgo.tar.gz. Sizes on that release run from 23.4 MB for the aarch64 PGO tar.gz up to 139.1 MB for the x86_64 PGO AppImage.

Release notes say the AppImage carries its dependencies and needs glibc 2.39 or newer. They name Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 40, Debian 13 and Arch as examples. The tar.gz build uses libraries from the system and needs Qt 6. Mark the AppImage executable with chmod +x and run it. That sentence is in the release text.

What I will not pretend to know

The handbook’s architecture page says amd64 is the best supported target and often hits the CPU first, because the JIT is the slow part. aarch64 native code execution is described for Android and for experimental Linux, not as a finished desktop default. I do not turn that into a recommended distro.

Wayland versus X11 is a setting, not a separate download. The settings page lists Force X11 from the handbook. Steam Deck is the same AppImage with its own page, because the deck user’s home path and the per-game reports are a different question from “which of the eight files do I grab”.

Questions

AppImage or tar.gz?

AppImage if you want the copy that bundles libraries and you are on glibc 2.39 or newer. tar.gz if you already have Qt 6 and want the system libraries.

Do I need both architectures?

No. x86_64 for a typical PC. aarch64 for an ARM Linux machine. macOS arm64 is a different file.
